Asphalt shingle roofs represent the largest percentage of roofs in Colorado. They offer a lower price point than other roofing material while still providing great curb appeal for a home or business owner. Many people, including some Colorado Springs roofing contractors, believe that asphalt shingle roofs are all the same. The experts at Hennessey Roofing whole-heartedly disagree. As we inspect, repair, and replace shingle roofs, we encounter many different asphalt shingles. Furthermore, we meet with shingle manufacturers and thoroughly review their product spec sheets. Hennessey Roofing strives to ensure we have the best roofing knowledge to help our customers. While many shingle manufacturers exist, our team highly recommends Malarkey Roofing Products.
Hail Damage Impact and Extreme Weather Resistance
The most obvious and most common roof damage involves hail damage. Hail damages shingle roofing by impacting it at high velocity. Malarkey offers NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt shingles. These shingles are specifically engineered by blending polymers from recycled materials such as tires with asphalt. In short, Malarkey designs their shingles to withstand class 3 high-impact hail damage while maintaining flexibility and strength. This class 3 testing simulates nearly 2-inch size hail hitting your roof at terminal velocity without causing damage. Malarkey also designs these shingles to withstand the extreme weather that Breckenridge, Keystone, and other Colorado mountain towns experience. They maintain their flexibility in the cold and even offer wind warranties for up to 130 mph when installed properly by a Malarkey Certified Installer. As of this writing, the current highest recorded wind gust in Colorado Springs was 96 mph during the bomb cyclone in March of 2019.
In addition to producing a superior shingle, Malarkey Roofing Products provide sustainability. Beyond including recycled tires in their roofing products, they create the first-ever 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules. These granules allow their shingle roofs to actively improve air quality throughout a city. According to the Malarkey website, these smog-reducing granules produce the same smog-fighting potential as two or more trees for the average-sized roof in Colorado Springs.
The Zone: Improved Fastener Placement
Improper fastener placement voids warranties, causes leaks, and leads to shingles being blown off of roofs. Malarkey Roofing Products manufactures their shingles with a larger, common bond nailing area that improves correct fastener placement. This means when installed by a certified installer, your roof will be warrantied against improper installation but you probably won't need the warranty. While roofs occasionally need warranty work, the improved larger nailing zone drastically decreases the likelihood of a warranty claim due to improper installation.
Not A Department Store Shingle
Hennessey Roofing recognizes the need for major home improvement stores and appreciates their convenience for local contractors. With that said, our team believes that when it comes to protecting your family and your property a commercial-grade product provides better protection. While local department stores stock many of Malarkey's competitors, that's not necessarily a good thing. In our experience, these brands fail more often and are installed incorrectly more often. Any person can get their hands on these types of shingles and claim to be a roofing contractor. We are not saying that everyone who uses department store shingles is a scammer, but we have not heard of a roofing scammer who was caught using anything other than department store shingles.
